Applauding Our Healthcare Heroes

Most people don’t get the kind of welcome for simply coming to work that TECO recently gave Tampa General Hospital (TGH) employees. But these are no ordinary employees – they’re heroes on the frontline fight against COVID-19.

Applause, noisemakers, signs like the kind Super Bowl or Stanley Cup champs might get, thumping dance beats and crowd-pleasing hooks of a DJ’s party mix: this was the scene at the hospital entrance as thousands of people across the spectrum of medical arts arrived to start their shifts. For months, they’ve fought a battle few could have anticipated two years ago. But the pandemic has brought them face-to-face with large-scale death, suffering, burnout and more. They need all the support the community can give them. TECO was proud to step up with a “clap-out” to show how much we care.

Our company has a long history with TGH. From TGH treating our team members after accidents to annual fundraisers we’ve held to benefit the hospital’s world-class burn center, our connections run deep. Now, with COVID-19 cases on the rise, TGH is helping a steady influx of patients. Amid this grim reality, the hospital was quick to praise TECO’s support.

“A big thanks to the TECO team for coming out bright and early to support the TGH team members who are on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Frann M. Richards, chief development officer with the TGH Foundation. “Your generosity and cheer brought smiles to many faces.”

She added, “Both of our organizations aid our community during the toughest of times. Whether it’s a natural disaster or global pandemic, the community counts on us. It’s even better when we can come together for a common goal. The TGH Foundation is honored to have TECO as a partner.”

TGH board member Rick Wall, vice president of Engineering and Operations with Peoples Gas, also praised the bond between the hospital and TECO.

“Since the time when TGH first opened its doors in 1927, our TECO companies have been right here in support for it, and it’s always been here for us. COVID-19 has tested everyone’s perseverance, but with TGH as one of the cornerstones of the community that we’re so fortunate to have, we’re all in better hands. The clap-out is over, but our applause for the heroes at TGH will never fall silent.”
