Sept. 15 is National IT Professionals Day and 2020 is the Year They Were Built For

Since 2015, Sept. 15 has become a nationally recognized day to honor an often-unsung hero of modern business who we rely on to keep us connected and to help keep our business going, especially during a pandemic – our IT team members. It’s a day to celebrate the increasing range of technologies we employ and acknowledge the rapid pace of change our IT pros must manage.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States, the IT team for Tampa Electric, Peoples Gas and New Mexico Gas Company had to quickly organize and prepare for a previously unmatched number of employees working from home – many of whom were doing so for the very first time. And they needed to maintain network availability and performance while troubleshooting potential issues.

Before our employees started working from home, a group of IT members gathered to discuss logistics and to create documentation for team members. Our Service Desk started working 12-hour shifts preparing for the uptick of calls. Support personnel were sent to multiple locations to answer questions and to help where needed. For the first time ever, we prepared our employees to take home desktop computers, monitors and other assets, such as Wi-Fi extenders, while gearing up to support 3,200 daily remote connections.

Information Technology & Telecommunication (IT&T) has answered the call. Our systems have remained active and available. Additionally, an internal COVID-19 website was designed over a weekend to quickly provide support and information, including an IT Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section to help users troubleshoot issues from home.

Thanks to our IT professionals’ efforts we’ve kept our businesses connected with each other and our customers.
