Chances are, one or more of these slogans triggered something for you. Do you need new running shoes? Are you craving a hamburger? Or a soda? Catchphrases catch our attention and stick with us. While it might not be as catchy as the others, this slogan can make a bigger impact on you and your neighbors. It can keep your natural gas and electricity flowing and your cable TV and wi-fi working. More importantly, it can keep you safe from damage and serious injury.
Aug. 11 – or 8/11 – is almost here and it is a great time to remind Floridians to always call 811 two days before beginning any digging project to have underground utility lines marked. With more people at home during the pandemic, and summer a peak time to work on home improvement projects, it’s more important than ever that we all remember to dig safely.
At Peoples Gas, safety is our No. 1 priority. A big part of our commitment to safety is ensuring our natural gas delivery system of more than 13,800 miles of underground pipelines operates safely. We respond to more than 1,300 incidents of pipeline damage each year, and professional excavators, landscapers and DIYers pose the biggest threats to our system.
Every digging project, no matter how large or small, warrants contacting 811 by phone or online. Installing a mailbox, building a deck, planting a tree and laying a patio are just some examples of digging projects that need a call to 811 before starting. Utility companies have two full business days, not including the day the call was placed, to mark natural gas lines. If you’re digging on Saturday, call by Wednesday.
Our Damage Prevention Coordinators are visiting job sites across the state to educate construction contractors and excavators in safe digging practices, but they need your help. Keep an eye out for digging projects in your neighborhood. If utility lines aren’t marked by colored flags or spray paint, remind workers and your neighbors to call 811 or visit sunshine811.com.
