We would not let International Women in Engineering Day (June 23) go by without shining a bright light on our women in an engineering role across Peoples Gas.

They work across Florida ensuring the safe construction of pipelines in civil and industrial engineering roles – to name a few – contributing greatly to our safety, reliability and customer service. Today, we join the Women’s Engineering Society to celebrate the amazing contributions and accomplishments that women in engineering roles are doing around the world and in our own company.

Darlene Callender is the North Regional Construction Project Manager for Peoples Gas. She says she appreciates being an engineer because it combines her passion for math, architecture and physics into one career.

With more than 25 years in energy services on both the natural gas and electric businesses of TECO, Darlene is happy to share her advice with women looking to pursue a career in engineering.

Darlene Callender, North Regional Construction Project Manager, says working in an engineering role gives her the opportunity to combine her love for math, architecture and physics into one career.

“I had the fortune to have a strong mentor during my time pursuing an engineering degree at the University of South Florida. She, too, had a similar challenge as me – a minority woman who was a single mother trying to earn an engineering degree. She told me to not allow anyone to define you due to your situation, your race or your gender, and that only you can define who you are. Only you know what you are capable of accomplishing. Believe in yourself and work hard to do it.”
